For one reason or another there has been a sudden wave of bands cancelling shows, namely shows I have planned to go to. Whether it be the entire show is cancelled or the band I wanted to see, cancellations are out of control.
The first of these cancellations was in March and it was The Early November. This may very well have been the most painful of the cancelled shows because it was the last show TEN would ever play in Upstate NY. I was in the car, en route to Club Infinity when Annie received a call from a friend that TEN had to cancel and fly back to NJ. The reason: Ace had a family emergency. The show however was still on, which meant no refund. We got there, and of course everyone else was just fine, if not thrilled, because they all wanted to see The Rocket Summer; I, however, was devastated. I cried for days after the announcement that TEN was going on "indefiante hiatus" and once again I was on the verge. I spent the entire show sitting at a table at the front of the club, sulking. What a night.
The next major disapointment was My Chemical Romance. Jensen and I spent somewhere in the neighborhood of $125 on tickets for four MCR shows. But due to salmonella poisoing all but one of the shows were cancelled. The first show was in Albany, we found out the night before (aka the day we planned on leaving Rochester) that the show was cancelled. Unsure of whether or not the next show would be cancelled we decided to drive to our friend Dan's house is Massachuesetts and then all go together to Reading, PA. We left Dan's house the next day (the day we were scheduled to be in Albany and the day before the PA show) and headed off to Reading. We were somewhere in New Jersey when we got a call from a friend in Mass., the Reading show was also cancelled. Hundreds of miles from home and not scheduled to be in NJ until Saturday for Day 1 of Bamboozle we pulled into a gas station to discuss our options. We decided it'd be best to just stay in NJ and wait for Bamboozle on Saturday and hope MCR didn't cancell that as well. We spent two nights in two shitty motels. Luckily we got to Bamboozle and MCR had not cancelled. After Bamboozle on Saturday night Jensen and I headed to Connecticut for a graduation before going to Portland, ME for the final show of our trip. Good thing we had to make that stop in CT because Sunday morning we got a call from Dan who had gone ahead with Kristin to Portland, that show was cancelled as well. Dan and Kristin had driven to Portland (about 8 hours) straight from Bamboozle, they hadn't slept since Friday night. Disapointed Jensen and I headed home to Rochester after her sister's graduation. The only good thing of all this is that the shows were completely cancelled and we were refunded all of our money for the three shows we didn't go to.
The next cancellation is Firescape. This show is scheduled for June 12th, a week from now. As a result of their van breaking down Firescape dropped off the rest of the tour, which means, yes the show is still on minus Firescape. I have a ticket, I still (kind of) want to go. However, everyone else who planned on going with me is no longer going. Which means I am disapointed and just wasted $11 on a ticket for a show I cannot go to.
The final cancellation....well it hasn't been confirmed yet (as far as I know, because I have been able find almost no information), but...Boys Like Girls may be cancelling Balloon Fest on Saturday June 9th. I'm glad there are no tickets for this one! But, alas, if this is cancelled (and I'm getting the feeling it is) I will be so very very disapointed.
